Disc for D17

I need a little help in figuring out what size etc. of a disc would work well behind a 1963 D17 gas. I'm about to take posession of the tractor and I have never had a tractor of this size before. When looking at discs there are several selections to make. Overall width, 7.5" or 9" blade spacing, 9" spacing on the front & 7.5" spacing on the rear, knotced or smooth blades, 18" or 20" blades, the list of choices goes on & on. The ground I'll be working is not real heavy, little or no clay.I'll be plowing of course, then I'll need to work the ground from there. This will become a hayfield after that and not need to be worked up again (hopefully ) for a number of years. The tractor has a hydraulic coupler at the rear so I'm leaning toward a pull type disc that can be raised and lowered for transporting to and from the field. I think knotched front and smooth rear blades might be a good set up but as I said, I have no experience with this. Any suggestions?

like notched front gangs they work trash better, 9 " spacing is fine for sod 7.5 is for real fine beds but just hit it again with the 9" and hold it shallow with the lift adjustments and it will do almost as good.

If you are working tough old sod it works best to disk it deep as you can roll it then plow when the furrow slice falls over it fills in the furrow and is a lot easier to work down and level for planting . We get a lot of ground to work that has never seen a plow it works for us. Tony

A twelve foot tandem wheel disc is common behind a D17. Notched blades are an advantage when discing heavy residue like corn stalks. Twenty inch blades can cut a bit deeper than 18 inch, and with the hydraulic lift you can decrease the cutting depth in heavy going. Another option behind the tractor is a 10-12 foot field cultivator. Discs have a tendency to pack the soil, although they are excellent for cutting up a sod field after it has been plowed. FC can do the same, but will take more trips to break up the sod chunks. Either one, with a tine harrow behind, will make a good seedbed.
