I just bought a new house and I bought a Allis Chalmer 912h tractor to cut the grass and snow. blow. The tractor has 50lb wheel weights and chains on the rear tires but it will not climb the driveway. The driveway is up hill and blacktoped but the wheels just spin on the wet surface. I do not have the owners manual so I am not sure what the problem is. I was wondering if thear was a way to lock the rear axle so that both wheels would spin at the same time.
As soon as I put weight on one wheel and it gets traction the tractor switches to the other wheel and it spins on the wet surface. I would appreciate any suggestions because I am getting tired of shoveling the driveway.

More rear weight,I use a Simplicity Legacy with a 54 in blower,300 # of weights on a rear bracket behind it and with my 300 it does not spin much. This tractor also has a diff lock. Also check tire pressure,I run about 10psi and also added a row of chain links that go around the tire in the middle of the tread.

You could add fluid to the rear tires.

Even when I have the blower up in the air and not blowing snow the tractor will still not climb the hill. It is not that steep of a grade and I dont understand why the tire just spins. The last time I got stuck at the bottom of the driveway I had to toe the tractor up with my Durango. It seems like thear is something wrong with the differential because as soon as I put weight on one wheel it switches wheels and just spins on the asphalt. I just salted the driveway this morning so maybe that will help but my vehicle climbs the driveway with no problem so I dont think it is that icy. Does anyone know if I can lock the rear axle. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

There are not many small tractors out there with a differential lock. I have a Bolens (Iseki) that has one, but I don't believe AC/Simplicity ever offered one. Have you checked the front wheels to make sure they turn freely on the axles? You may have to leave a sanded strip on one side of your drive to go up on.

I have a 912H with a 42" blower and 80 lbs on each wheel and I weigh 230. The problem is that the blower puts a lot of weight to far forward. Just add more weight to the rear.

It's basically physics....too much weight up front and not enough in the back. You can try adding more weight to the rear wheels or even build a weight box for the rear. You might just have to blow going downhill and go uphill empty.

Trick I use for for my garden tractor- windshield washer fluid in the tires. Rear tire weight went from 45#'s to 110.
