I'd pull my shifter boot up and spray around where the reverse rod goes throught the shifter ball with some PB Blaster and see if it frees up.
Do not force the reverse rod, it will not stand for much pulling and prying. As far as taking the shifter out, there is a gasket, it's an easy one to hammer out, or there is the RTV lazy mans gasket. Not what I would call a fun shifter to take apart, but you will only need to take it off, flip it over and free up the reverse plate.
