A friend of mine just got him a 1940 Allis Chalmers CA. He redone the motor but the hydraulic system has water in it and he doesn't know what kind of oil to use in it.

Universal Tractor Fluid works just fine if the seals are not leaky. NAPA and Walmart carry it. If the seals weep you can go to a gear oil but the hydraulics get mighty sluggish in cold weather. BTW- the CA was not built until 1949-50.It is either a C or newer than you think. Post the serial number and someone will tell you what it is.

the transmission, differential and PTO housing share the same oil. there are 3 of a 1/2 inch pipe plug on the bottom. pull all three. one fill next to your left foot on the transmission case. yes- 20wt unniversal hydraulic fluid. dont be suprised if the new oil looks a liitle "wet" after hours use. hard to get all the old stuff out. might want to change a second time after a couple days if you can afford another $10. takes about 8 quarts. if you have a 4 speed it is CA, if it is a 3 speed it is a C.
