I sprayed with oven cleaner, power washed, used an angle grinder with a knoted wire wheel, and an air grinder with a small wire wheel. That is purty much how I clean most of my engines unless I need to send them out to have machining that I can't do in my shop, then I have the machine shop bake or boil them.

Oh, one other thing. Do you use a shop press to remove piston sleeves and valve guides.

No. I have a punch like tool for driving out the guides, and a 24" long bar and a really big hammer for the sleeves. I never try to take the sleeves out with the engine on the tractor. I am old and don't like the struggle of crawlin back an forth from under a tractor or any thing. Easyer for me to get them out and up to where I don't have to bend a lot. Faster to.

Is the bar the same diameter as the sleeve or do you tap around the perimeter. My block is out and stripped of parts. I have to take the head to have the valve seats ground. The crank needs grinding. The top of the manifold rotted and the center cylinders were a little rusted. The oil pump must have got some water too, there's about a 3/4" spot of corrosion in the cylinder that needs to be honed so I don't eat up the vanes.

Haven't brought the rear end home yet or the '38 thats all together. Figured I'd get the business end of the '41 done first. At least it's keeping me out of the recliner while it's 10 degrees outside.

The bar I use is 3/4" x 1 1/4" and I tap from one side to the other so as not to cock the sleeve as I pound it out.
