I usually lurk over on the Ford 8N board or the Farmall Cub board as those are the only type I have had. Just bought a piece of land and a small Allis-Chalmers CA is included. I have had a difficult time getting detailed informaion on the net. The 8N and the Cub have huge followings and the information is much easier to find.
The tractor had been sitting for a couple of years. Long story short it has been jerry-rigged a whole lot, especially the wiring and hand clutch (which is non-existent). I ripped all the rigged electrical off (It had a house disconnect as well as a host of other residential wiring attached). The starter looked new and worked well. I don't have a clue what type generator or regulator these things have but I assume they were 6volt positive ground just like most stuff in the early 50's. I drained and changed the oil, filter, air breather oil (water) drained about 9 gallons of water out of the gas tank (which looks like a train wreck inside) The transmission is a little low on fluid but I haven't put any in yet as I don't know what flavor of hydro-tranny juice these things use. The carb float valve was basically cemented shut with varnish so I cleaned that out and slapped everything back together. Two squirts of ether with a wire running directly from a 6volt battery to the coil and wouldn't you know it it started right up albeit with less than four cylinders. Oil pressure looked about 1/2 on the guage so I ran her back and forth up the field for a good test run. Not much power at all with one cylinder cutting out. After a little running, the cylinder started kicking in and she ran much better. Very, very loud as the exhaust manifold has egg sized holes in it where it has rotted out. So there you go. The Allis runs. It is a narrow front which has always scared me as my uncle worked all his life with a Allis WD and mom never would let me near the thing although dad let me drive the Ford 861 some. I am very impressed with how stoutly built this little tractor is. Sorry this is so lengthy but I do have a couple of questions.

1. What type transmission fluid?
2. Are hand clutches available?
3. What size tires on the original power adjust rims?
4. What was the basic charging setup and what type generator did these things have (currently it has a Delco Remy but the bracket is rigged and it doesn't look original.
5. In the future, could a wide front end be swapped for the narrow front?
6. Lastly what are the best websites specializing in the CA? For the 8N, John Smith's site in Peoria, Il is excellent.

Thanks to any and all replies. I have enjoyed your forum for the last few weeks while exploring these questions with little luck. Denton Sisk, Lynchburg, Virginia

The original wiring setup didn't have a regulator as such - it was a resistor/light switch combo. All the way in, lights were off and the Field (F) terminal on the generator was run through the resistor to give you around 2 to 3 amps charge on the battery constantly. One click out (I think - it's been a while) and the lights came on and the F terminal was grounded straight to the frame for more current. All the way out (second click) and the lights were off but the F terminal was still grounded - charged around 10 amps on that setting.

I like a good regulator *much* better - the battery lasts longer and you're not guessing when it's charged. I put one on my 1951 CA and am glad I did.

Now for more - since good 6 volt batteries are so expensive these days, and a 6 volt positive ground regulator costs around $65 (and I think the 3 position light/resistor switch is in the $40 to $60 range), consider (a) a $40 GM 10Si alternator and a 12 volt battery (and a coil/ballast resistor and light bulbs) or re-wiring your 6 volt generator for 12 volt at about $95 if you like the original looks. I like my 6 volt CA, but if I had it to do again she'd be 12 volt like my WD and WD45 are now.

By theway, Norm's Toys has headlight sthat are identical to the originals for around $125 a pair if you need a set. I bought a set for my B and they are exactly the same as those originals on my CA.

Denton, congradulations on getting your CA. The other replies are right, you need to get the manuals for it. But since you asked, I'll do my best to answer. 1, I use SAE30 ND in mine. You fill the transmission, differential and hydraulic system all at the same time and at the same place. On the left side of the trans. theres a dip stick, put it in & check it there. You have to have the PTO in gear to work the lift. 2, Good luck on finding hand clutches. Valu- bilt has them, but there used not rebuilt or remaned. They just take them out of a junked tractor and send it to you. 3, 10-24 4, The generator was 6v positive ground. I beleive Delco. If your system has been rigged up like you said, I would suggest you convert it to a 12v negitive ground set up using a one wire alternator. It's quicker cheaper and easier. 5, I don't see any reason that you couldn't swap a narrow front for a wide front, but I'm not 100% certain. 6, I don't know of any web site to get any better information from. I know what you mean though. I come here to get info. myself, but if you don't have a B, WD, or WD-45 it's like you don't exist. If you think that's not true, just look at the other questions on this board. They'd rather give marital advise than help someone get their tractor going. I have two CAs, one wide the other narrow. These are my utility tractors, and see work on a regular basis. My wide front needs a hand clutch now. There is one on e-bay at this time, but how do you know if it's good or not. That's the delema I'm in. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get started venting. I hope that I've been some help to you. That's what this board is for. Good luck, Todd.

I just purchased a 1952 CA. It is a show tractor so just about everything is perfect on it. I need to know where to get things like oil filters, light bulbs, and other small parts.

David, I buy 95% of my parts at the local parts house (NAPA). As for the oil filter goes, don't use a Wix. They changed the style and it makes your oil pressure drop. I use a Purolator L30007. Get it at Advance Auto. They'll have to order it, but they can get it. HTH,Todd.

I don't have answers to all your questions, but I used to own a CA and dug up what's left of the owner's manual. The first 12 pages are missing, so here is all the info I found that looks useful- the electrical system is positive ground, the points set on .020, the valves set on .012, and tire size was 10-24. The book doesn't show it, but seems like I remember the hp being around 24 or 25. It was a great little tractor. It had a strong hydraulic system that was very responsive. I had a double 12" plow that it handled just fine. Only dislike I had was that it was terrible to get on and off of. You either needed some acrobat training or a step ladder.

Universal Tractor Fluid from Walmart works just fine.
Agco has quite a few parts available for your CA. Sandy Lake Imp at 724-376-2489 is a great source.
12.4's work real well on a CA.
Delco gen was stock. I would convert to an alternator myself.
AllisChalmers .com is the best site for AC around!
