i already have a tach.i need someone to tell me how to hook it up.my tractor is an allis chalmers -b with a magneto,can anyone help me ?

any tach has to be hooked up to the coil neg. term. open the mag and look for term. of coil that goes to the points that is the neg. try that and get back to me

You need a special electric tach to use with a magneto. I have used them on the Vertex magneto I had on my pulling tractor which was powered by an Early Chrysler Hemi. If you have a normal electric tach it would be easier to convert to battery ignition. There are so tachs for lamn and garden equipment which trigger from a plug wire.

Most electrical aftermarket tachs are 12V neg. ground, 4 wire units. If this is what you have, and your B model is converted to 12V, you may be able to use it. Usual hook-ups are: Red wire- 12V feed (off ign. sw.) Black- ground, Green- trigger (to coil) White- gauge light (to headlight sw.) With magneto, you should be able to pick up a dwell signal off the mag shut-down stud. You may have to isolate the trigger circuit though... Good Luck! It just may work depending on the tach design.

might not be much help, but there are two kinds of tacks, mechanical or electric. if it is mechanical you connect to a drive point such as the end of the generator or distributor. if it is electric it will have several wires on the back. red is power (needs 12 volts) and black is probably ground. a couple will be for lighting up the dial. last there is a "signal" wire which normally gets its pulse from the distributor or coil. not sure you can connect this to a magnito, most of its wires are internal as compared to distributor with external coil. there is also a switch on the tack to choose 4-6-8 cylinders. i think a generic tack might be dificult to connect on a mag tractor. you would need one that clamps to a spark plug wire and counts pulses, or a strobe light type to look at the crank pulley (for shop work- not permanent).
