My father has found a D12 for sale and I have some questions before he runs off and buys it.

How many series of D12 were there? How can you tell the different series? Is ther anything specific to D12s that we should be aware of?

This would be our 3rd Allis (already have a B and a CA) and we are quite excited about getting it as we really like the looks of the D10 and D12s.

Thanks in advance.

There are Series I, II, and III based on the serial numbers. AT s/n 5501 it became SII, at 9001 became SIII.
After S/N 3001 they got live pto and low pressure hydraulics as well as the larger 149 cid engine and a draft sensitive 3pt hitch. The series III tractors got an oval muffler and lights on the fenders and were available with the optional "range transmission" which doubled the number of speeds. These are the most desirable models and bring big money. Watch out for 3rd gear problems as that was their main weak point....jumping out of gear under load or when going downhill.
