I'm restoring a 39B from the clutch back. I'm replacing all the seals and am up to removing rhe brake drums without damaging them. I have removed the bands and shoes,the set bolts and need any and all sugestions as to whats next. Plainallis

The setup I use to remove both the pinion shaft and axle. The retaining nut holding the bull gear on has to be loosened as the axle is pressed out.

sure beats a 5 pound hammer. my press aint big enough for a final drive case, but i use it to push new bearings onto the shafts prior to reassembly. I sure could use a littlerig to level up the case prior to pounding. I have several special pieces of "pipe" and bushing drivers i made to install bearings on and off the trans and final drive shafts. special tools really help.

Yes, the book calls for an extended arm puller, however I took mine to the local Agco dealer and they pressed the axle through the drum. Dave.

the book says to use a puller.
--i remove the outer pinion bearing cover (4 bolt cover on outside). turn the final drive housing on its end with the bull gear laying flat, and the pinion shaft sticking straight up where you can see the drum in the open hole. soak the drum/ shaft with penetrating oil and let it set a couple minutes. soak it again and let it set a few more minutes. take a brass rod 1 inch diameter and hold on end of the shaft and hit it sharply with a 5 pound hammer. hold the punch with vice grips if you wish. normally takes about 20 good whacks and it starts to move. about 50 to get it to punch thru. drum dont set square on the bottom of the housing, but it works. afterwards, wire brush the shaft good, polish the hole and test fit on the shaft prior to reinstalling the shaft in housing. should be a slip fit. put antisieze on parts prior to reinstalling. I normally turn the drum .030 undersize to clean up the brake face prior to installing the drum. get a long seal driver for the seal behind the drum. it is an easy one to ruin during installation, cause it sets so deep.
