Hello Gents,

I usually hang on the Massey board, but hopefully tomarrow I might be mixing some yellow tint into the red paint and get a couple persian "B's". I'm going to look at a package deal, a '39 that runs and a 41 that they say is a parts tractor. What should I look for on an Allis? I don't plan on using the '41 for parts. The engine is stuck and the mag is missing. We're supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow tomarrow and the winter projects start.

Hope the deal goes well and look forward to frequenting your board.

Charlie

I have a '39 Allis 'B' and it is probably my favorite of all my tractors. It is a very handy size and has lots of power for most jobs. It will push an incredible amount of snow especially when chained up, and handles a #6 Massey mower very well. Extremely manouverable and reliable.

I got a 39 B back in Aug. Some idiot welded a frame on the front and added his own electric start. The thing was stuck and the bottom covers of the rear wheel drive gears were rusted through. I still bought it for $650. Got it unstuck, started, new oil all over, and lots of body work on hood & front grill. Still am looking for rear rims & tires. All in All a great little project.

THe 39 should have hand brakes. the 41 will have foot brakes. starters are more valuable than hand crank, and more desirable to others for resale. see if they have PTO shaft out back, and small hydraulic pump mounted opposite the belt pulley shaft. early tractors had problems with the wheel hub nuts coming loose and wheel "wobble" on the bull shaft. this can tear up the splines. try to push top of tire toward center of tractor and back. rims can have rot if there waas fluid in the tires in the past. drive the 39 around and see what transmission and finals sound like. many have a small whine in 1 or 2 gears, but should not clunk or growel. no one ever changed the oil in final drives. i bout a 42 thah had 140 gear lube or thicker (looked like tar) in the trans and finals. so thick it would not lube. all the bearings were pitted and had to be replaced. all seals were leather and will be leaking after 50 years.----- -really nice small tractors, i have a couple and would like to have more. presently have one torn down as a winter project.

As long as the rubber boot on the sift lever is in good shape water will not get into the transmission. If it is cracked or missing, suspect there may be some or a lot of water.
