It will work in a D17, I've been told, don't know for absolute sure, that the combine engine has a longer stroke and a bit more power. I put one in a D17 last summer. You'll have to make some changes, the governor, like the one guy said, cover up the hole for the fuel pump, and the front pulley is different. If it were me, and I had the tractor engine, I'd change the whole front cover. If your D17 has power steering, and you don't use the tractors front cover, you'll have a dowel pin you'll have to pull out of the power steering pump, and you'll have to knock out the plug and put the tractors throttle linkage on the combine engine. I had mine pretty much together before I realized this, so I went ahead and used the front cover from the combine, it would have just been easier to swap the front covers I think. The flywheels are different, so you'll need the tractor flywheel. The exhaust is also different on the combine, and I used the original tractors intake/exhaust. Can't think of anything else I had to do, all it all it worked out great, and sure made a sweet tractor. I put in new studs for the intake/exhaust, new front and rear seals, pan and valve cover gaskets, and pilot bearing, and clutch disc, all together it ran about 320 dollars, not counting the 125 dollars I gave for the combine. I did pull a rod and main bearning and checked for wear while I had the pan off, mine were is great shape so didn't have to do anything there. There is a bushing you'll have to change for the throttle linkage to, if you use the combines front cover, about forgot that, can't think of anything else. Good Luck, holler if you need help, I don't know much more than what I've said, this is the first and only one I've ever messed with, but I'd sure do it again, I really like my D17.
