I have an A-C tractor that I have thought was an orchard model for tears, looking at the Photos section, i now believe that it is a 1B, but doing a search I find referances to an orchard model B. Can these two be confused in identification? thanks wmw

The difference between an orchard and an IB is the length of the torque tube. The orchard has the same length as a regular B while the IB is shorter. Real orchard Bs are lots more rare than IBs but easy to fake.

I think what you might be talking about is the IB, this is the industrial version of the B. It was made to be a "mule" to pull wagons of parts in factory assembly lines. Also sold to county and state highway departments with sickle mowers to maintain highways. The IB is basically a B, with the rear final drives rotated 90 degrees forward. This moves the wheel center 6 inches forward and lowers the tractor 6 inches. The wishbone front axle is removed and a straight box axle installed. The original IB in the early 40s were built right along the line with the B. After the war they received their own serial numbers and the stamping by the gear shift says IB. The tell tale sign of the later units is the wrap around c-channel that goes from rear fender, toward the front and wraps around the radiator. The tractor had a pan type seat and fenders off a WD45. All power train parts were same as the B. Other tractor manufacturese refered to similar units they made as orchard tractors, normally low riders, maybe a pto, usually no hydraulics. Used to pull wagons thru the apple orchard??? I have photos of mine and several others on this site if you want, just ask.

Just read an history of AC book and I said that early IB's did not have this wrap around channel, some had no chanel and some had only sides. It also said there was a very similar tractor which was an orchard model C. The difference was a slightly different front axle. A true Orchard model would be a very rare find indead.

thanks butch and steve for the info, Mine has a channel on each side, it doesnt wrap around, (maybe burned off?) It has a battery box on the fender, pan seat , no lift, looks identical to the IB's listed in the photo section. (but no engine or hood) Appearently a B or C engine will fit? regards micky
