Yep, grounding the "F" terminal makes it charge at the maximum rate. The explanations above do a good job of telling how the 3 position switch works. One thing I did for my 1951 CA was to buy a 6 volt positive ground regulator. It was around $60 from NAPA (VR63 I think - you'd better check that, though). I mounted it under the gas tank on the right side of the tool box. Now it charges and cuts back like it should whether I use lights or not. It makes sure the battery is charged properly and it makes the battery last a good bit longer - mine used to last about 3 years, now they last 5 years plus since they are charged correctly. $60 is still pretty steep. You might think about replacement 6 volt battery costs (you'll probably buy one every 3 to 5 years or so anyway) and consider re-wiring the generator to 12 volt negative ground. Costs about $100 to do that here, but I'm thinking it's the way to go in the long haul. You'd have to install a new on/off light switch, change light bulbs, reverse the wires on the ammeter, and either put a ballast resistor between the ignition wire and the coil or add a so-called "6 volt/12 volt" coil that probably has an internal ballast resistor. Think I might go that route next time since good 6 volt batteries are so high these days. I'm doing that on a WD I just brought home.
