Allis Baler Questions

I let my mind wander back to "the good old days" and thought about the time when the Allis Chalmers small round balers seemed to be everywhere.

I still see them in the weeds occasionally.
Is anyone out there still using these old machines?

The reason I ask, is I am going to buy a spare baler to play around with. I will not buy one if nobody will buy the hay it bales. Is there any market for the small round bales?

i like the AC round baler and use it --over 5000 this yr. but i dont think any one will buy them if there is anything else. here in mid mo most buy large rounds or small squares--both are easier to move--i bale and leave in the field and then move hot wire in the winter to control consumption. i dont pick them up or haul them out in the winter--seems like a labor savings to me.

JC, It depends on the hay, area, & season to sell hay (and make money).I have 2 (older)friends that run them,1 just because the other guy has 100 cows and rolled up over 14000 this year!I was impress (reminded me of the sixies!). But i also remember when dad ran one , a bad day could make pull out your hair. Eddie

Amen to the "bad day"! The baler usually worked well, but it could be stubborn if things weren't just right. Oh yes, I remember handling all those bales too. We couldn't just leave them out in the field when we took three cuttings of alfalfa in a season. When you have nothing but "armstrong" equipment to handle those bales, you wouldn't want to be doing too many thousand in a season.

Some parts of farming as a kid in the 60's were memorable; haying with a rotobaler was not among the more pleasant memories.
