In reference to the ad about the D-10 below,I took the guy's word that the tractor runs good.When I went to check it out, I found that it smokes like crazy, which brings me to my next questions. Does the engine have sleeves, and approximately how much would it cost to rebuild it? I have not purchased this tractor yet, and would like to know what I'm getting into first.Thanks in advance, Scott

Scott, I don't want to be negative here, but that sounds high as H#LL to me. I bought a D14 a couple of years ago, fixed the little things and put new 6 ply rear tires on it, and I couldn't get what he's asking out of mine, and it don't smoke, don't jump out of gear and the power director works just fine. Oh, almost forgot, also put new brake shoes on and new tie rods....I'll bet I couldn't get 2500 for mine today.

First, Larry - You are absolutely correct, your D14 will never be worth as much as a D10 of equal condition. The D14 was much more common and not nearly as collectable.

Second, Scott - I would say it comes down to two factors 1) how bad do you want a D10 and 2) do you have the $.

Try to get the guy down in price but don't be surprised if he won't budge. D10s sell, that all there is to it, doesn't matter what condition.

I understand, but, according to the tractor value book that I have, a D-10 SHOULD be worth NEARLY twice as much as a D-14 in the same condition.If I have read right, the D-10 and D-12 are the most collectable of the D series. I understand that something is worth what someone will pay, but this is a starting point.Thanks, Scott

Yes the motor has sleeves. To go thru the motor can run you about 450 to 550 in parts.The D10 is a nice tractor, agile, easy to get on and off and plenty of power .You need to check the transmission really well, they are prone to jumping out of gear, mainly third. Drive the tractor around for a bit in all gears ,throttling up and down in each gear to see if it jumps out. If you have some sort of hill to ride it down will help, they stay in fine as long as they are pulling with some sort of a load but the minute you go down a grade it may jump. Also try popping the clutch several times in each gear to see. The motors aren't nearly as bad or pricey to fix as the tranny's are. It makes a large differnece if value which series you have. Post your serial number to figure that out and tell us if the lights are on the radiator shroud or on the fender ? and where is the hyd pump ? up front on the motor so you have live hyd's or back on the pto housing ? Does it have the range transmission that gives you 8 speeds forward and 2 in reverse ? Does it have spin out rims ? another value factor . Nice sheetmetal is another price factor, it's hard to find so getting a nice straight tractor is a big help. hth Mike

I've got another question. I checked the compression on the tractor. It was 130-140 lbs on all cylinders. What should it be. It smokes like a freight train. Where is the oil coming from?

Well, here goes; The tractor has spin out rims, the tires are nearly new, the lights are on the radiator shroud, it has live hydraulics, does not have the two speed transmission. It is missing the right hand plate below the gas tank. It has a 3 pt hitch, and one remote. The steering is tight, and the transmission stays in all gears.It has been painted long ago, and the paint is badly faded. There is no rust, and the sheetmetal is excellent. I can't read the ser#. The only numbers that I see are on the left side of the engine, behind the oil filter. The number is AM-4902-2, with a 2 underneath. Below the distributer is JllN. There is nothing to designate this as a D-10. What should I look for to verify that this is a D-10? Also, again, is it worth the money? Thanks in advance, Scott

I found a decal that had been painted over on the left hand plate below the gas tank. Put a little Easy Off on it ,wiped it off, and there was D-10 Series 2.

Where is the ser.# plate?Couldn't find it.If it,s not there, how much does it hurt the value?Also, if everything else checks out, is it, in your opinion, worth the $2500 he's asking? Thanks, Scott

serial number is on the left side of tractor where motor mounts to bell housing. stamped into flat boss. motor number is in frontof this on flat spot on the block. tractor is about $3500 in good shape, so if you buy for $2500 and spend $1000 on motor, paint and tires, dont count any labor, you are o.k. Its probably about right, but maybe a little on the high side. I would be thinking $1800-$2000. but i might not want it as bad a you do.
