have d-17 tractor when you drive it for about 5-10 minutes the tractor acts as if is has no gears it just sits there and does not move. pto works like it should tractor will not go anywhere let it sit for a little while and then it works for a few minutes. the only thing we have done to tractor was replace ears on power director that broke after that this what it does also when put into low range hi/lo range lever jerks and will not stay in gear

Mr. Webb, your information is in the mail along with my letter that adds a little for help. There was some mention of a WD or WD-45 clutch in these posts. Keep in mind your D-
17 clutch is a good bit different from those clutches, since the D-17 is actually two clutches in one. The WD and WD-
45 only stopped the forward motion of the tractor, the D-
17 does that in addition to its high/low range feature. They both run in oil and are hand actuated, but after that the D-
17 with its high/low range is a different deal. Twenty weight non-detergent motor oil is what's used in the D-17. Have a good day and God Bless

If you want to give that clutch a whirl before splitting the tractor and all that, and if you don't have access to the factory information or a good shop manual for it, I can send you a copy of the procedure from the Alllis-Chalmers' shop manual I have. That's what I used to do. And it is a "procedure." Chances are (hopefully) someone just got to fooling with it not knowing and has it all messed up. Those kind can be fixed right through that little access plate on the right side. If you need what I have, get in touch, give me your mailing address or a fax and I'll get it to you if you want. Mr. Webb, I'll get a copy out of Allis-Chalmers' shop manual out of here today. I'm in Louisiana. You're Oklahoma. Gotta be all right! Hope this helps. That clutch takes a little time and patience, and as I mentioned, and you'll see from the instructions, it is a bit of a procedure, but it's certainly not something you can't sit down and do yourself. Just pull up a stool and spend a little time with it. I hope this adjustment to the clutch will bring it back around. I've no idea where the shims for it might be available any more but you can certainly work around that. Have a good day and God Bless.

Sounds like low and high range plates in the Power Director are worn out- maybe just adjustment. Replacing means a tractor split.

The WD/WD45 has shims to adjust the hand clutch- don't remember if the D17 uses the same system, but with little movement, I would suspect that adjustment is too late. Check the OPERATOR manual for adjustment, the SERVICE manual for R&R.
