I have owned two tractors. A 1947 Ford 2N and a 1947 Farmall BN. I have had terrible luck with both tractors. I am now in search for another tractor. The Allis Chalmers WD caught my eye. Is a WD a good dependable all purpose tractor. I mainly want to use it for brush hogging but I will also plow and pull trailers with it. How much should I expect to pay for one? I appreciate any help.

WDs are a nice tractor, and parts are still relatively easy to find. Most of the parts are interchangeable with the WD45. However they do not have three point hitch so many newer implements that utilize 3pt hitch cannot be used unless you get a 3pt conversion kit. Otherwise they are a handy tractor with live power through the use of the transmission cluth(hand clutch).

Dave K's right. This is a good tractor and his other comments are accurate and good. There were two transmission shifters also, since he mentioned the transmission. The straight lever was the first, then the curved lever was considered the later. What happened as he mentioned was folks shifting with the hand clutch for which it was never intended. It was intended only to stop the forward motion of the tractor. And a lot of that was in response to the Allis-Chalmers round baler which required stopping every few seconds for it to tie a bale. This tractor was carried largely right on into the WD-45 in 1956, the engine being the principal difference. And the WD of course pretty much came right from the old 26 horsepower or so WC, so it has a long lineage. The 45 had 45 horsepower or so, and the WD 33, so there was a pretty big difference in what was different at all. The tractor truly was ahead of its time, but so was Allis-Chalmers. They were the first with rubber tires, lights starters, power shift wheels he mentioned and a host of other things. Allis-Chalmers is also generally credited with the V-Belt itself. But, as the saying goes, a lot of the pioneers had arrows in their backs. So it turned out with Allis-Chalmers.

Very dependable tractor, lots of power. Be sure the hydrulics is working and you use a mounted plow when plowing. That lets the Traction Booster function and it will out plow anything even near it's horsepower. One of the strongest pulling tractors made. Way ahead of its time with live PTO and Hydrulics, spin out rear wheels, traction booster. Be carefull with the bush hog as the weak link in the WD is the gear box driving the PTO. As long as you use an overunning clutch on the bush hog you will be okay but if you do not, and hit something that stalls the bush hog at speed you have a good chance of cracking the PTO gear case.

Also, if you are looking for one to buy make sure you drive it and it does not pop out of gear when either or both pulling and coasting. They can be pretty easily repaired but this was the second weak point, the shifter forks wear if it was not maintained properly and some folks insist on shifting with the hand clutch instead of the foot clutch. Only the foot clutch is designed for shifting gears!

Was rasied with WD tractors. Have orginal 1950 bought by my grandfather new, a 1952 wide front axle we farmed with. Both totally restored.
and a 1957 WD 45 we use for plowing and brush hogging.
Very reliable tractor.

Depends what part of the country you're from as to price. $1000-$1500 should get you a decent one. They are very dependable if they have been well cared for.
