Hi guys. I posted the following on the Gleaner Combine Talk Show, but thought I'd put it here, too. After a fruitless search for an E Gleaner, my father-in-law has offered to give me his F2. He's not AT ALL mechanical, which is why this machine has been sitting in his shed since fall '93 (he hates to work on anything). He shelled 80 acres of corn that fall before parking it. It has the 4cyl. turbo engine (what size is that & what did AC use it in?), hydraulic unloading auger, 3 sp. transmission w/v.s., new drive tires, one of which is still in great shape (the other one is flat and has some surface cracks in it), a 4-38 corn head in great shape, and a 15 ft. grain table w/new wobble box (new as of '93). The a/c doesn't work, and I'm really hoping the engine isn't locked up. The batteries of course are dead, and I think the ignition switch needs to be replaced (it felt really "gummy"). Will one 12 volt battery, like a 4DLT, work in place of the 2 6 volts? The belts and chains look pretty good, though I'll probably replace some belts anyway. The belt on the unloading auger seems awfully loose, and I was told it was hard to keep it adjusted. What do you guys think? What else should I be looking out for on this machine? Thanks in advance! Any other tips or info about this engine (or combine) would be greatly appreciated. I've already had one guy tell me it's a good one. Thanks.

The first year of F2 combines were very much like the F. You have the newer F2, wich has bigger parts. Be sure you always specify the serial # when looking for parts, as there are these 2 different F2 models.

I have a non-turbo early style F2. very good machine. Simple for a guy to work on, parts are available. I think you will be much, much better off than an E, which is too rare & old to repair easily. (At least around 'here'.)

The unloading belt is supposed to be loose. As the linkage wears out, people try to rotate the handle to tighten up - doesn't work, the belt will drag. You would need to tighten up all the linkage points if there is an unloading issue.

Do you have the older orange corn head, or the newer black corn head? Many people hate the long chains on the orange heads, but work fine for me.

Thanks, Paul. This cornhead is a 4-38 and I'm pretty sure it's a black head. I'll need a 4-30 and am wondering if there's a market for a good used 4-38. Know what the displacement is on the 4 cyl.? I'm thinking it's a 200, but don't know if that's right.

How close are you to New Ulm again???? I might be about the only one left using 38s.... ;) Dealers don't seem to want them, altho a black head could have a little value.

I know someone here that has an orange 38 head cut down to 30", I suppose you would not want that, but it would be cheap, just mentioning it.

According to mapquest, we're about 760 miles apart, if indeed it's New Ulm, MN as I'm thinking. If you'd really be interested, I could try to get you some pictures. It's in good shape. What's the price on the orange 30"? I don't even know what a 4-30 c/h runs, orange or black. What about that 4 cyl. engine, 200 cid? A neighbor of mine had a F2 like yours w/the 301/6 that he liked really well. When he wore it out, he traded for an F3. Wonder how hard it'd be to swap the gear drive for a hydro...That's the only thing I'll miss when going to the F2. However, I figure the ease of maintenance and reliability should offset the belt drive.

Jonesboro, IL. Not ready to buy or trade yet as I haven't even gotten the rig home to inspect real close. I expect I'll be in the tradin' mood later in the winter, though. Thanks. BTW, what was the main differences between the orange and black corn heads?

The F2 diesel is a 95 hp four cylinder, turboed. Plenty of power- runs about three gallons per hour, 70 gallon fuel tank lasts a couple of days. Ran mine for 19 years. Good machine, easy to work on. Weighs about 11000 lbs, ch is 2500. Good light machine for wet ground, add duals behind that 438 head and it really goes through mud. Serial # 39200 (1979?)or higher is the long shoe version, has more capacity. Get the OPERATOR manual according to your serial number, so you have details on all features.

What size duals did you run? My uncle has one that has 28L singles on it and he can run through 6" of water.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. The F2 I'm getting has 23.1x26 r/c tires and looks like it'll run through a pond. :-) I am curious though about the drive belt. Can you load the combine (full hopper, soft field) so much that the drive belt will slip? We had a 540 Massey one time that would go through drive belts if it was very muddy. 'Fraid I'll miss the hyrdo on this new machine. For all their faults, the hydrostat sure made the IH and my Oliver nice to run (when the 915 wasn't in the shed for repairs, anyway).

When I had duals on, I think the inside tires were 18.4-26, anyway, they had the same height as the 16.9-28 from the D17. I made a spacer band to fit the combine, and used one inch square blocks (4 of them) to go between the D17 duals and the combine spacer band. Brought it down to a 26" rim. When I went to the 4-30 head, I had the original rims cut and added a 10" band to use 28L-26 tires as singles- they fit behind the head, but stuck out a bit. Works ok if you plant straight and sober.

HELLO,The engine is the same as AC 6080 (6070 non turbo). One big battery will work, if not real cold. The unloading belt, anyway the ones i have saw are always loose lookin. Should be a good machine take your time & ask questions to get the buy bugs out of it(from lack of maintance).
