ALLIS CHALMERS Diesel Engine Tractor Question

I need one of you real Allis Pros to answer a few questions for me....Like what A-C model tractor(s) would be the best in the 30hp to 40hp range? A tractor that would be good in that range for basic duties such as mowing, and dragging the occasional Pine tree or two, and pushing or pulling a blade on a long gravel driveway, and post hole digging...you know...the basics? Need a real good 3pt set up with good dependable hydraulics. I've got to admit that MF did that right, for sure. But an old family friend trusts A-C (and IH also) above anything...but he is seriously ill and can't help me much anymore at close to 3000 miles away...the phone bills would be too much. Who makes the diesel engines in question? What are the sizes, and # of cylinders? I am only experienced with a larger MF 175 and want a smaller tractor with plenty of get up and go. I love the Perkins diesels...does A-C have any Perkins diesels in their rigs? How are the D series tractors? Like the D-17 or D-14 or which ever one is in the 30 to 40hp class? How about the 5045? I really need an Allis expert to help me figure out which models to be watching for as it gets to be time to find a new old tractor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I will go ahead and thank you ahead of time, and again when I see some of your vast Allis Chalmers knowledge. Because I know more than a few of you must be able to recite all this stuff off the top of your heads while taking a nap. Thanks! Lynch

If you really want an AC and you like the Perkins, then look for the 170 or 175 that is in the 50 to 60 HP range or if you want smaller, go with the 160 (that had the 3 cyl. 169 cid engine). All three are awesome little machines and do whatever you want to do with them.

I would have to disagree with Steve about diesels. I would only buy a diesel. They command higher prices for a reason. They use less fuel and last longer. They can do more work per horsepower also. Parts may cost more, but you are better off in the long run. I have less trouble with the diesels than with the gas tractors. My brother has had a D15 diesel for over 20 years and has had no problems. It will outpull larger gas tractors.

While I am no Allis expert I do know that the Allis 170 and 175 have the Perkins deisel engine. they are In the 50-60 HP range, in my opinion a very reliable tractor. Allis also had a 160 which is about the HP range you mentioned but I personelly know nothing about this tractor. while the Wd and Wd forty five tractor are about the HP range you mentioned they did not come with a three point. I have a three point kit on my WD and do not like it as well as the snap coupler equipment that was made for the tractor. I like the D series tractors and the later ones came with factory three point. I know the WD-45 deisel was a Buddah and understand that parts are hard to come by.I do not know what deisel was used in the D series but I think some of the earlier ones were Buddah as well.

-dont buy a diesel
-the D17 was one of the finest tractors ever built, but it is 50 HP , buy it anyway.
-Look real hard at a WD or WD45, older than the 17, but well equipped to do what you want. Some have 3 points, but they can be added for extra $$
-normally the price of a WD45 will be $1000 less than a D17
-D14 and 15 are nice, but fewer around and normally higher $$
-watch waht you buy if it was built after 1970- those are imports.
