HARD STARTING WD45

Hello fellows, this summer my WD45 would start just ok and turnover very slow with the 6 volt system. now it is getting cold here in mn. and does not want to turnover too well, after i charge it on the 6 amp. battery charger for say 8 hours and go to start it, it will turnover very slow and then smoke is coming from the neg. cable that goes to the starter...it gets very hot and it starts to melt the rubber boot thet covers the connection. this is a pos. ground system right?
because that is how mine is hooked up...pos. cable goes to the frame. maybe my battery is bad because it is 4 years old? should i go with a 12 volt setup and how much would it cost.

If you buy a Deere you will never stop crying. With the constant maintenance to keep those POS running on a constant basis takes an act of god. The Allis might be hard to start, but unlike a Deere at least it starts.

Gary,
Could be a possibility of two problems. First, the battery could be going away, and second as Dave K mentioned, make sure the cable connections and the cables themselves are heavy enough and free of corrosion. If you can see a little bit of green corrosion around the cable terminals or jacket, inspect the cables real close. You may find that the corrosion is on it's way up the cables. A draw test on the battery after a full charge will tell you if the battery is okay to remain in service. Inspect and replace or clean the easy stuff first before condemming the starter motor. If you think you need new cables, drop us a line. We make cables for the WD series machines....

The 6V systems require large gage battery cables, many have been replaced with smaller gage 12 volt type cables. First make certain your cables are 0 gage, then make certain ALL connections are clean and tight. This includes the starter where it enters the frame of the engine. This is held simply with a set screw and can get dirty and corroded. Remove starter and clean all this up. Next remove the switch from the starter and clean up the copper stud on the starter and on the switch. Make certain all your grounds are clean (yes, this is a positive ground system) If you still have problems, replace the battery. 4 years is about all that you can expect from it. I myself doubt you have a starter problem. I have a 1948 WD and with clean connections and heavy cables she starts fine. From new the 6V systems never did spin the engine fast but they always worked.

If all your connections are good, chances are your starter needs new bushings. When they are bad enough for the armature to touch the fields, it puts a huge load on the battery

Do what Old said, and check the ground strap and all starter to battery wires and terminals.

I'd have the battery tested at your parts store and also have the starter tested. It sounds like the starter may be getting weak, when they get weak they pull a lot more amps and can make that cable do what it's doing to you. 12 volt will get it started easyer and faster in all weather. It isn't hard to change over to 12 volts but it costs around $100 to do so. hope this helps

I would check all connections-be sure they are tight, clean and unbroken. I usually pick up 12 V one wire alternators for the core price of $5 to $7 around swap meets. A little wiring-use your stock guages and you are in business for no more than ten bucks..
