I hit a cement block with my bush hog the other day, and it seems to have done something to the way the engine runs. Whan I hit the block, the engine stopped instantly!!! The engine will start, but sounds like the timing is off. It backfires and misses pritty bad. Changing the timing doesn,t seem to help at all. I,ve checked the valve train, push rods and compression, all seen to be ok. With # 1 piston at top of the compression stroke, the distributer is at #1 position. I understand there is no timing belt, so it shouldn,t be able to skip time. Pulled distributer and checked geer and cent. advance ok.Right now I am at A total loss. Anybody have any ideas???

Sounds like it may have jumped time. Check to see that #1 plug will fire when it's due.

Spray some WD40 in the Dist cap and clean it out and see what happens.

Are you getting good fuel flow to the carb? It might have knocked some rust loose in the gas tank.

I have killed a 45 a hundred times on the farm. She always came back except one time. I warped an exhaust valve. It is hard to believe you did damage to the engine. Have you checked the plugs and ignition condensor? Throw a new set in and see what happens. I would then check out the coil. Always replace the simple stuff first. The only other thing I can think of is the timing gear but your timing checks out. Does it always stay the same?

I can't think of anything specific to cause that. Perhaps the quick shock caused the carb to be messed up or the points to be bent some or something. I have worked WD's since 1948 and stalled them pretty quick when hooking a large rock with a plow. Never had that happen though. Did you retime it by lining up the mark correctly on the flywheel?
