Have 190 XT, always had starting problem when cold (< 50deg). Had engine problem that required a total rebuild, yet it still is hard to fire up, all she does is smoke. unless we plug in a coolant heater. Manifold heater has little effect. Runs fine once she fires. No problem starting when hot.

Is this just the nature of the beast, or should I check more things? Injectors were supposedly checked and cleaned, same with the inj. pump.

Any info appreciated

Have a 185 with the same 301 engine,to start I always have to give the manifold heater one min. then away it goes, If it is cold I will use the spray can, but I always make sure the primer pump is pumped up good, I seem to have a leak some place,(does not show anywhere). so check your filters see if you are getting air into the system. another tip, our 220 has a electric fuel pump,, what a difference that makes,turn the key on, listen for the pump to come up to pressure then hit the starter, best starting tractor we have in the Diesel rigs. Except for the cummins V-8 on the 440.

we've got a 190xt, and a real good block heater, about 2 hrs and the coolant is up about 150 deg. have to plug it in under about 50 degrees, sometimes needs either under 70. Also when it works all day in the summer, sometimes we have to pump the primer pump while cranking to get it fired, even though we got smoke coming out the pipe already.

Every diesel engine requires a very high starting RPM even if you thick spins over good it needs all the help it can get. starter and cables have to be in top shape even when you have new batteries.

Thanks for the input guys. 110v outlet only a few feet away in the shed, so no big deal on the heater. Used A-C parts in rebuild, may do better after the rings seat in. I don't really like the ether thing; might be OK with a tired engine, but not, IMO, in a new one.

We have a 1966 190xt. Has close to 500 hrs on a major. Used an allis chalmers rebuild kit. Starts easily until you get down in the 30's. Never used either in it. When it gets close to freezing we'll plug it in.

Dad bought a used 1967 190 XT Diesel in 1972,always plugged it in when around 40, when got colder Starting fluid was usually needed. Roger

Had a lot of A.C. with the 301 block, they all start hard if it is cold ,cloudy, or if some one walks past with a snow cone.

Dad bought a 175 Allis it was always hard to start cold later a 6060 Allis it was the same way and my 170 allis is also hard to start cold. The manifold heater reall helps on mine. When it get down around thirty five I plug mine in overnight if going to use it first thing in morning or if I think I might need it to clear the lane out to the road. It is sooo much easier to start I figure it saves more wear and tear on the starter as well the engine and is a good investment on what little electricity it takes for the heater and is a lot cheaper than ether.

They forgot to tell you when you bought it that you buy a case of starting fluid every month that it goes below 60 degrees. When you had it rebuilt, you should have the M&W total seal kit put in it. They have a blow-out top ring that builds heat quicker and that will start when it gets down to 20 degrees. I have rebuilt a bunch of the 301's and 426's and couldn't believe how well they start and run.

the one I had was the same way any time it was cold I had to use starting fluid to get it to start I know this doesn't help you much but I hope it tells you a little
