I have a WD with an Autolite starter model MCL-6104. The gear recently failed to mesh with the flywheel and ground it back about an eighth of an inch. The front edges of the gear are mushroomed in a few places. I cannot find another unit to replace it with. My question is, can i file down the leading edges that are bad (about half) and continue to use it. Thanks for any help.

Are you talking about the gear on the starter? You can easily get a new Bendix assembly if that is what you mean. If you are talking about the ring gear on the flywheel these are also available but you have to pull the engine (as far as I know) to change it.

sounds like a good idea to me. just make sure the bendiz and spring are o.k. so you dont have any more problems.
