Just bought a 49 WD with a 45 engine. Operates fine. Want to use good clean oil so I pulled valve cover ,which was clean, then pan. Found some small bits of metal and this 1/4" pin with snap ring groves in both ends.Small amount of sludge. The manual shows a pin in the governor, could this have dropped during overhaul. Yes i"m a new owner with a manual. P.S. also a green "B". THANKS/ D.WILL Greenwald

SamH is spot on right. WC's, WD's, 45's and D17's (all the same basic engine) had a real problem with this. I have owned a WC, WD, and 4 45's and have had the governor weight come unglued two times.

Makes for a lot of power and a real interesting ride when it happens. There is almost always some chunks that make their way to the pan. Nothing to worry about as I think the weights are made of a fairly soft material.

Same thing happened to me when I bought my D-14. I figured the last owner blew out the governor and just didn't bother to remove it from the oil pan. This must be a common problem.

I found something like that when I first changed the oil in my WD it was stuck to the magnetized drain plug. I took it to an old Mechanic that had worked on a lot of Allis tractors and that is what he said it was.

Most likely a previous owner broke a governor weight and replaced it without removing the pan. Seems that the older governors used a pin with cotter key

Yep: Same thing on D-17, was changing oil and ker-plunk, oil is not supposed to make that sound. Had one chipped tooth on cam gear, but somebody had already fixed. Dave.
