Whatever happened to A.C. ?

I am new to the old tractor world, and have just finished reading both of Roger Welches books on the Allis WD. I have looked at some old tractors as my first restoration project, and it seems to me the A.C's were well designed, built, and marketed. What happened to the company? Did they go belly-up? Did they get bought out ? When did production end? My other love is old bicycles, and it seem the same thing happened to A.C as happened to Schwinn?I can't find a book to tell me about the fate of the company, so maybe some of you can help-thanks

Try Reading Norm Swinford's book "Allis-Chalmers" Farm Equipment 1914-1985. A very good read.

They were bought out by a German company (forgot the name at the moment). Think it was Deutz/KMD. Anywho, that was in 84 or 85. Now, through a bunch of corporate stuff, it's now AGCO-Allis. Not much left of the oroginal AC company. Just the paint color pretty much. You can still get lots of parts for the old AC's. Maybe more so than for some of the others, including IH. I'm not sure if there is a book that covers what happened. I know if you read CH Wendel's book, The Allis Chalmers Story, he covers some of that. Try the link below for some good AC information.
