Well I finally got the tractor into the shop here and took a good look at why the clutch always needs adjusting. The crankshaft has about .200" of movement. You can move it back with a bar against the crank pulley then move it forward by depressing the clutch. The dealer I talked to said that the 6080 models had this problem if someone left the pto engaged and the pto clutch lever in the off pos when not in use. This he said is not heard of with the 6140's. So, if I can get a look at what kind of fix they made for the 6080 models maybe I can fabricate something similar for this one. Has any one ever run into this or know of anyone who has? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I think we have the fix figured out. On the crank pulley the OEM put three holes to allow pulling the pulley from the front of the crank. I made a plate to fit the fulley and made a bracket to bolt on in front of that plate. Using two pieces of wear bronze we eliminated the movement of the crank,(which fixes the crank movement and the original problem of no free play in the clutch) but we have heat and friction now. So, I've ordered a thrust bearing and seal, once that comes I'll make a new plate to hold the bearing and seal along with a stub shaft. This will allow the stub shaft to turn as it comes in contact with the stop fixture when clutch is depressed, and should be a total fix. I'm sure it will cost a whole lot less than Agco would want if they offered a fix, which they don't. Also alot cheaper than replacing a crank.

Not familiar with a 6140....does it use the 200 cu in, 4 cyl Allis diesel?

If it does, there was an update for that engine that used a hub bolted to the front pulley that carried a Timken tapered roller bearing and used a cast iron frame that bolted to the front of the motor to apply pressure to the bearing and carry the thrust load of the clutch and crankshaft.

If you have an AGCO Allis dealer near you, they should be able to find part numbers for these pieces in their service bulletins.

This was only used on the very first 6060-6070-6080 tractors. the later ones had a revised block and thrust bearing to cure the problem.

Unfortunately, it is not an Allis motor or something common like a Perkins. It is a Toyoshama made in Japan like the rest of the tractor. Having said that we may have a fix in mind, using something similar to the fix for the other models. We'll have to design and manufacture it ourselves. It's times like this that I'm glad to be a machinist and have a very sharp partner. I hope our efforts really work as this is a really nice tractor other than this one problem.
