47B front spindles

hello all, i saw further down the post someone was going to rebush the front spindles. my question is this. were all the spindles welded to the tie rod arms at the top? does this need to be ground off to drop the spindle? if so what is the purpose of the lock bolt on the side of the axle housing. i need to know what i'm getting into with this. my bushings are shot and the I-T manual doesn't show or tell much. thanks in advance, greg

The spindles did not come from the factory welded at the top. The bolt on the front with the locknut was there to hold the arm onto the spindle properly. That being said, over the years some folks had problems with the bolt getting loose and the hole "wallowing" out, which allowed the spindle to wobble and move in relation to the arm.

The good news is that the spindles were the same for both sides, so if it hasn't been done before you can simply swap spindles from left to right and vice-versa to get a non-"wallowed" hole toward the front for the bolt. You may need to provide some attention to the threads in the arm that it screws into. And you might need new bolts.

You'll definitely have to grind off the welds to get it apart to replace the bushings. Not an easy job, I'd guess (I have one to do myself but I've been putting it off for a while now). Heat and force in liberal amounts may be needed to get the bolt out and the arm off the top of the spindle (after you grind the welds off) - maybe someone that's done it recently will comment.
