I have an opportunity to buy this tractor very reasonably. The owner admits that the clutch slips when he is moving manure and dirt piles. He said he has to get on it hard in order to slip the clutch. The engine has been overhauled and smokes. He said it has always smoked even prior to the overhaul.
What would the clutch rebuild cost me and can a novice mechanic such as myself do it? I have replaced clutch's and engines but no rebuiding experience.
Any ideas on the diesel smoking like that?
The AC 170 I talked of earlier sold for $5,000. The model 72 MeKee snow blower went for $800.00. I bought the fast hitch for $75.00 and should have bought the blower.

The power director clutch will slip if the linkage is worn or not adjusted properly. The control valve will not fully engage.

I had the main clutch, thowout bearing and pressure plate replaced and it cost $1000, that wasn't through a dealer, it was a neighbors son that is just getting started in the repair business. If it is the Hi/Low range clutches slipping it'll cost more and as long as you have it split you might as well replace the main clutch. One way to tell which clutches are slipping is to engage the pto and have someone watch it while you get the clutch to slip, if the pto keeps turning the hi/lo clutches are slipping, if it stops it's the main clutch. As far as the smoking, if it's white smoke, it could be the injectors, about $75 ea. Hope this helps.
