I recently bought a 1937 AC model WC with hand crank start. I got tired and gave up before it would start, any pointers like how much throttle, how much choke, do I tighten up against compression before trying to spin the motor? I don't have a clue and the guy I bought it from was no help, he said he pulled it with another tractor to start it.

Thanks for the replies, I'll go back out to the farm and try again. Maybe just gremlins, I couldn't get my 55 Ford farm truck to start either.

I think these WC's have their own personality. If I do not have an audience mine usually will start on the second crank. If there are more than two people watching it will throw fits, when it does that, just walk away and come back about ten minutes later when no one is looking and it will start.

I also have a 1937 WC. Open the throttle about 3 notches, close the choke, grab the crank with thumb and fingers on one side as described earlier, and pull up, starting with the crank at about 5 o'clock position. You'll hear the impulse click once on the mag since you have only turned the engine over about 1/2 round. DO this again, then do it again with the choke open. SHould start if everything is ok. Make sure your mag is working properly. Sounds like something is not quite correct if the other owner always had to pull it. What you don't want to do is just grab the crank and start spinning it. I've never had the crank backfired back at me when starting a tractor with a magneto. The impulse automatically retards the timing. Have had it happen with tractors with a distributor. My personal policy is no hand cranking of a tractor with a distributor.

I can't give you any advice on cranking that thing except DON'T! There were notorious arm breakers. At the very least, BE SURE mag timing is correct, and that the impulse is working correctly, and that you have a HOT spark and good spark plugs, and crank in a safe manner... that includes not spinning it all the way over, just tugging TOWARDS you in short tugs... with your knuckles to the outside. I'm sure others will have more safety suggestions with this, but that is the absolute LEAST you need to do to crank safely.

Keep your thumb on the same side of the crank handle as your fingers - if you don't a backfire could break an arm easily.....!
