Genertor Discharges

When I got the 1948 C, it was neg. ground and battery wouldn't charge, so I changed to pos. ground, and the ammeter is still showing it discharg, this motor has hid a coil put on it bypassing the magneto. Do I need to change some wiring?

the od 6 volt systems are setup different than a new 12 volt with voltage regulator. The light switch on the C is part of the charging system. It connects the "F" terminal on the generator to ground to compleate the circuit. THere is a resistor on the light switch. Ground thru the resistor is "low charge" groudn straight to the frame is "high charge. TO test do this---
--take both wires off the generator "A" and "F" terminals.
--groudn the "F" to the tractor frame
--start the tractor and measure voltage across the "A" and "F" terminals. probably get about 10-15 volts.
--Connect the "A" terminal to the voltage cutout and the cutout to the amp meter, and the ampmeter to the battery. Leave the "F" grounded.
--start tractor and see if you have current on the ampmeter and measure voltage to be 6.8 volts.
--if you are o.k. to this point then you generaotr is o.k. and the cutout is o.k.
--take the "F" terminal ground wire and connect back to the light switch. make sure the resisitor is good and the light switch is grounded good.. should be o.k. now
--if the light switch or ground is the problem, you can leave the "F" terminla shorted to ground (frame) for an hour or so at a time, it only charges 8 amps full charge. --if you need a print of the wiring to the light, send e-mail.

Thanks Steve, I'm going to replace all the wiring to make sure I don't short some where, and run it off my magneto and do away with the coil.

You may have a magneto with a bad coil in it. My 1949 B has had an external coil added - the magento coil apparently went bad and they converted it. Yours may or may not be like this - just a heads up before you remvoe the external coil from the setup.

Thomas you shouldnt need to change any wiring except on the amp meter if the amp gauge showed a discharge when the batt was neg ground and you changed to pos the meter will read discharge when charging If this happened then change the wires on the gauge from terminal to term (all the wires on one term to the other and likewise with the other term)Now see if it shows that its charging and email me back Good Luck Carl
