Battery Question

I need a new battery for my D-17 series 1 Diesel. Should I buy a 12 volt battery or (2) 6 volt batteries. I know it origonally came with (2) 6 volts in series. What is physical size (width x length) to fit the box?

The rule of current is: Fewer thick plates = long duration current. Many thinner plates = more cranking amps.

Since you're after better cranking amps, go for two 12v batteries. If you were replacing your RV "house batteries" I'd go for two 6v batteries in series.

Hi Bob,

I have an Oliver 77 diesel that originally had two 6v batteries in series. I put in two 12v batteries in parallel years ago and have been extremely pleased with the result. You get a lot more cold cranking amps with that combination (usually) and that is important in a cold climate with a diesel engine.

Batteries are available in standard sizes as defined by the BCI (Battery Council International, I think). Check out the various sizes available that could fit in your existing battery box. There is a place somewhere on the net that lists the different standard sizes (there are many) but I didn't bookmark it and have forgotten the URL. Or you could just check out the possibilities at your friendly local NAPA store.

bob i use one standard 12v auto batt. aprox. 950 cold crank amps that i got at wal mart and it works for me all year around even when the old 17d starts hard. just my $.02 worth
