A-C B Diff Ring Gear Growl after rebuild

I rebuilt a 1945 A-C "B" a year ago. Ever since there's been a growl/grind coming from the area of the differential ring gear and trans output shaft pinion. The new differential bearings were adjusted per the manual to "no end play and a free rolling fit." Also installed new bearings on the pinion shaft. The backlash measured around .005".

I get mixed opinions about whether I should have marked teeth before disassembly (I didn't). I also seem to remember that I had to buy 2 of the large pinion shaft bearings because the one NAPA sold me was too thick compared with the original (if you lay the bearing flat and measure its height).

I've been blaming this problem on differential shimming but now wonder if the problem is that the pinion shaft sticks out too far toward differential.

Any suggestions or fixes would be appreciated.
