My casting # is AM2916-20.
So the casting year should have been 1948.
How do you determine if it's high or low compression? I guess I could measure volumes and divide. Is there any easier tell-tale sign. The motor is stuck so I can't measure compression.

Compression Ratio is determined by the pistons - so if its stuck and you are going to replace pistons and liners, you can build it however you want subject to piston availability - which probably means standard gas late pistons at 5.7:1.

As to motor s/n, its actually on the edge of the flange where motor mounts to transmission at about a 45 degree angle. Probably have to scrape paint off.

I would always assume i had the standard (high) unless you have a special intake manifold, warm up fuel tank under the hood, or special serial number on the block. i know of no other way except pull the head and start measuring.

all CE motors have the casing number AM2916. I believe Dick L did a study and believes the last two numbers designate the year of manufacture. Started in 1938 with 10, 1939 ws 11, 1940 was 13, etc. so 20 would be 1948. I tries this on my 3 B tractors and believe Dick is correct, it works. my 29 was built in 1957.

C On my 1948 C, the serial numbers are on left side, if you are on the sitting on it, behind the oil bath air cleaner, on the 45 degree flat spot on the back of the engine, the serial number on my 48 C is CE118352-G.

Hello Thomas T.:

Already checked the left side and rear of the block. No serial # found. The casting number on the right side of the block is AM2916 20. What's your casting #?

Oh, ok, maybe the 1 just looks like a 7, so that would make my casting number, AM 2916 25, but it is a 1948 !
