B brake bands - can't get them installed

39 B, trying to install new replacement brake bands, can get them about 1/2 way then they stick. Just at the point where I can't get leverage on them. Tried both bands in both housings, can get them to the point I can feel them at the bottom hole, then no more. Hve not tried to force the issue as they are somewhat pricey and I don't have a spare.

Housings were carfully clenaed before being rebuilt, so I know there is not dirt in there.

Bands are type with caged nut, not stud.

Any special tricks? The end without the nut is narrowere but there is more band to be moved on that side. I've tried both ways and neither seems happy.

Thanks for the help.

I found the two bands had different amounts aof arch to them (bought same place same time). Reformed the anchor end on both slighlty by holding loosely in vise and applying my somewhat large self. Then they would go around to where I could hook them with a wire and pull up.

When I put bands on my C I hooked a heavy piece of wire to the band and threaded it through. Made a loop in the end of the wire and hooked it to an old fashioned bumper jack and pulled the bands through.

They need to come out and when they do the metal part of the bands will flattened out and have to be reformed to the curve matching the brake drum. I pry with a strong large screwdriver out from the front and over the back as I turn the rear tire. At this point use plenty of lube. The lube can be washed out after the band is out and before you put the new ones back in. I know you do not wish to replace the metal bands but if they are rusted beyond repair they come out the hardest. You win some and you lose some in this game of repairing old iron.

Had similar problems and along with the pulling wire, try jacking up the wheel so you can roll it and let the drum help walk the band around.

try twisting a piece of mecanics wire through the caged nut and threading it through first, that will give you somthing to pull up on. we put bands in a I-B last winter and had the same prob. the bands wern't bent enough,and wanted to scrape on the way around, the wire trick worked. luck.
