hello i have a 1950 WD. the mag is dead on it and someone drilled a hole in and put a 12 volt coil on it and it is now a system. i would like to make the mag work a agian and i was woundering if there was a gear inside of there or a coupleing in there because i just dont have enough courage to rip the mag off. the Mag is a FMJ.

Ian, We stock parts and service the Fairbanks mags. There is a set of timing gears inside the mag that when the cover is lifted, one of those gears comes with the cover. What you have to do is just match the gears back up when it's time to re-install the mag's cover. The steel gear that is connected via snap ring to the magnetic rotor shaft has either a dimple or a "dog ear" on one of the gears. (depends on the year when the mag was built)The fiber gear in the cover has a "C" either stamped in the gear or may be a decal on the gear. This "C" needs to be aligned with the dimple or "dog ear" tooth on the steel gear to put the two in time. Theres a little more to it if you decide to remove the mag from the engine. It's a pretty simple process though, and really not that bad even if you decide to remove the mag from the engine and take it to the bench to work on....
