I purchased a D17 that had been sitting awhile. The mice had gotten into the hole at the bottom of the brake housing and built nests. The anchor pin is now rusted to the brake shoes. I cleaned out the nests and flooded the area with penatrating oil. I let it sit and all I accomplished so far is to break the end of the anchor pin off. I put a vice grips on it and turned it right off. I could see the shoes moving in the direction I was twisting it, thats why I know its froze to the shoes and not the casting. No room for a torch. Anyone got any ideas on how to get the anchor pin out. I thought (even started) about drilling it out but I'm only 42 years old, I don't think I'd live long enough to drill out that pin. Thanks Randy [email protected]

After using the penetrating oil, try this: drill a 3/4 inch hole in a piece of flat iron, set it over the pin and weld it in place. The heat of welding will help to loosen the pin, and use the iron as a handle to get the pin out.

randy the brake pins are known trouble makers. i usually use P B blaster penatrating oil [ i get it at walmart] and spray the pins and holes in housing a couple times a day for a weak or so and have had real good luck getting pins out i usually use a pipe wrench to get them started moving and the use vice grips and twist back and forth until they are out. good luck, let me know if i can help you more. david l wilson

Better confirm this with someone else, but I think you can take the axle off and get to the brake, and then get a torch in.
