My father in law just purchased an Allis Chalmers C with a belly mower. It runs great, but it takes three hands to turn it. It has not been driven for two years. The previous owner said it was hard steering. Do we need to overhaul the steering box, or is this natural for this tractor? Also, can it be fitted for power steering?

What Aaron said and before you open up the stearing box take the drag link off at one end or the other to see if the stearing box or the shaft is rusted up in the front. I have had a couple that water had found its way into the shaft that goes to the gear in the top stearing housing.

I have a model C as well, and it is quite easy to steer without power steering. Even my wife and mother have no trouble steering it. I would suggest checking to make sure none of the steering grease zerks are plugged, and give the steering a good grease job. If they are plugged, just unscrew the old one and thread in a new one. That would be the easiest place to start.
