1943 Allis C. New plug wires (solid wire copper core), new points, rotor & condensor, timing set, carb cleaned and adjusted, fuel tank drained & cleaned, filled with fresh gas. Excellent blue/white spark at plugs, cleaned and regapped Champions (do the AC's really make that much difference?). Runs very well once I get it started but it is a real chore to start. I have tried the "quarter turn, just lift it over" up to the "really breaking a sweat" spin it over 4 to 6 full revolutions. I did a compression check and found an average 60# dry, 90# wet. Is 60#'s simply too low to expect the engine to start easily? Any tricks to starting by hand?

Did you check the inpulse coupler on the mag? You should hear a "snap" from the mag as you crank the engine over slowly. A week or broken impulse spring can make starting by hand cranking nearly impossible

I agree with Steve on the plugs but my low pressure limit before rebuild is anything below 80#. 60# sounds like way too light on the compression.

My freshly rebuilt '38 would require the Incredible Hulk to spin it over 6 times. The best I've been able to do is, on a few times, getting it to go two compression strokes in one crank.

Low compression will cause poor starting. Once it gets running, does it smoke? Maybe you just need the valves turned.

Hi Greg, Is it possible the floats are a little on the low side? Sounds to me like it takes a while to get fuel "upstairs" to get it fired. Once it get's enough fuel, it fires off. Another problem believe it or not could be the plugs. Loose those Champions and screw a set of 295 Autolites in it. Had a couple customers with hard starting troubles, and it turned out to be the Champion plugs. One of them now has arms like the Incredible Hulk from cranking till he changed plug brands! (Nah, just kiddin')I'm not a Champion lover, just never had any luck with Champs no matter what I installed them in. HTH
