When I engage the starter on my WD it groans and turns over just as if you were hand cranking and quits turning over and then I have to pull the ring again and it does the same thing, turns over once and quits then maybe on the third pull it'll spin like my ford does and start. Is this normal for a WD?// I put new batt cables on and this didn't help.

I had the same problem with the starter on my WC. make sure the battery is heavy and so are the hat cables ifthis is not a help you might need to replace or have the coils inside the starter replaceed as i did. a 12v system does no good.

Throw away the 6 volt battery install a 12 battery, coil, and generater (I like alternaters)may have to rewire for lights. We had one years ago that acted that way converted over and workes well even when it is hot.

You can also look inside the starter and check if the brushes are still long enough to contact the armature and the armature is clean and bright. Even so, the starter may have shorts in it. As the others have said, connections are most likely the problem. Your battery is a good one, right?

Remove the battery cable from the starter. Remove the switch from the starter (The one that is activated when you pull the ring and that the battery cable is connected to.) If I remember right there are simply 2 screws in it. Inside the switch there is a copper bar which contacts a copper stud on the starter when you pull the ring. Clean both of these copper surfaces well so you have good contact. They tend to corrode and arc and get dirty. Cleaning them worked for me on my 6V WD. If the switch contact is in too bad a shape you may need a new one.

It's a 6v and the cables are heavy. I replaced them to be sure they were heavy enough.

DID YOU CLEAN ALL THE GROUND TERMINALS, REMOVE THE STARTER AND CLEAN IT ON THE OUTSIDE AND THE INSIDE OF THE HOLE WHERE IT MOUNTS?
GOOD GROUND JUST AS IMPORTANT AS GOOD HOT CONNECTIONS LOL BOB
