The manual for my D-14 lists SAE 20 for my climate (usu. above 35), and SAE 10 for below 10 degrees, and SAE 30 for over 90 degrees. Actually, I'll probably use it from below 30 all the way to the high 80's. Can't seem to find SAE 20 - even at the tractor supply. Would 10W30 work? Were variable visc. oils available back when the D-14 was built?

10W30 will work perfectly. Multiweight oils were not available or else not widely used at the time of the D14. In old D17 manuals, it tells the same as in your D14 manuals. In newer D17's, it also says to use those weights at those temps, but it also says that 10W30 can be used at all temperatures. To make a long story short, use 10W30.

Thanks! Good to know. I rather suspected such, and there are a million varieties of 10W30 at good prices. Most sources say when you choose an oil you can use it in the hydraulics and transmission (?) is this true of 10W30 as well?

Don't use 10W-30 motor oil in the hydraulics. THe detergent will foam under high pressures resulting in no hydraulics at all. Best for the hydraulics is to get some trans/hydraulic oil available at any implement dealer or farm store. Wal-Mart even has it (at least in rural communities). Make sure it is for transmission and hydraulic use. THere are some that say they're just for hydraulics.

What weight transmission oil would you use in an AC D-10 Series III? What kind?
