Morn'n y'all,

Hope all is well in your part of the country this morning. It's a beautiful morning here in southwest Michigan.

Last night when I was mowing the north field, I became aware of a "clunking" noise coming from the left final drive of our little C. It sounded as if it was related to the larger drive gear (at least that was my assumption) as it was 2-3 seconds between "clunks", as if it were related to the teeth of the gear. There didn't seem to be any dragging of that wheel, but when I stopped, got off, and pushed against the wheel, there was some freeplay, though it didn't seem to be any more than what was on the right side.

I'm not familiar with the innards of those final drives, nor do I know if the "clunking" is unique to a C, but though I'd throw it out on the forum and see what y'all might think.

Thanks,

Dave

Hey fellas, you're all really great to respond the way you did. I'll check things over and get back with you. I really appreciate the info. That's what makes this forum so great!

Got sweet corn comin' on, as well as broom corn, indian corn and popcorn. The dry beans are fillin' out their pods and we're beginning to harvest zucchini and spaghetti squash, and the other small field I'm fixin' to sow in winter wheat is full of buckwheat blossoms and getting ready to turn under, so the little C will be busy over the next month. Thanks again, fellas. I'll get back with you.

Dave

Hey Dave--Anxious to hear if you found the cause of your "clunking" on Allis C, on accounta I got the same symptoms in mine.

Hey Linda and wdTom...

Great to hear from you both. Really appreciate you writin'.

First off; Linda, I'll let you know as soon as I find out. Nancey and I "took the weekend off" here in Southwest Michigan. We had a rather large, intense storm blow through here Friday night that had some wind and hail and knocked over some of the sweet corn just as it was beginning to fill in; not enough to destroy all the crop (we have about half an acre) but just enough that we had to pause and catch our breaths.

So I left the little C safe tucked away in the bookstore (the small barn we currently store our farm equimpment, but is going to be turned into a small used bookstore soon), and we went up along the Lake to play at the Coast Guard festival in Grand Haven, Mich, then went yesterday afternoon to an old-fashion auction where we bought a nice upright freezer. So now it's time to get on the little C and back to the fields. I promise to let you know.

weTom; You're right about that. We've been pretty fortunate about getting "just enough, but not too much rain" this year while other's have too much or not enough. Friday's storm was short in duration, but powerful. Fortunately the beans (we have all sorts of dry-shell beans) and the bulk of the corns (sweet, popcorn, broomcorn, indian) came through without a hitch, and Nancey's flowers are just beautiful.

We're (Nancey and I) are headed to Bangor, Maine, in October. I will have business to conduct there. First time we've been to that part of the country, and we're looking forward to it.

We'll better get back to what pays the bills! I'll let you know what I find out in a day or two. Hope you both have a great week.

Dave

You sound like you are so busy you are going to have to look for time to fix the tractor. Glad things are comming in good for you. Around here, southern New England, things are like to float away if the farmers are not careful. Lots of rain. Not much dust on the road this year.

Well the others have about covered it. I would suggest though that for peace of mind you pull the pans off the bottom of the final drives, both, and change the oil, look at the gears, spinning them by hand to inspect. Check for bearing adjustment too at this time. Then replace pans and fill with clean gear oil. I agree though, it is probably the wheel/rim connection.

Dave,
I don't know what Rob suggested (his reply is invisible as of right now) but I would check the wheel locks. Both rear wheels on my B klunk like that, and the wheel locks are loose and won't tighten up completely.

Dave, It sounds like the wheel is loosening up. Mine
did the same thing right after we restored it. This is from the archives:

In Reply to: AC 1942 C Rim clamps loose ? posted by Fred on November 20, 2001 at 05:34:51:

Fred, two of the clamps should have eccentric bolts in them and the other two should have regular bolts. The way I install my rims on the wheel centers is to put the two stationary clamps on the wheel and turn wheel so those two clamps are on the top. I then put the rim on and install the other two clamps with the eccentric bolts. Make sure that the two lugs that are welded on the rim are on one of the stationary clamps. Then you turn the two eccentric bolts (in opposite directions) untill the clamps are tight against the rim. Besure and hold the bolts with one wrench while you snug the nuts down or the bolts might turn and loosen the clamp.
