Don, chekc your e-mail. i sent a diagram of the wiring. the delco is the most common alternator to use. just make sure it is built after 1975 and has the internal voltage regulator. you need a resistor 10 ohm, 10 watt in one of the alternator lines. this makes a small voltage drop and makes the alternator "kick in" at lower RPM. you can get it at Radio shack for $1. it is brwon and 3 inches long, 1/4 inch square. Make sure the wire goes to a switch or key to shut off power when not running so you dont drain the battery. if you need more info, write me.

Reverse the cables on the battery and the two small wires on the coil. Lights and starter are good as is. It will probably run with the coil as is but alot of them will run rough with the coil polarity backwards. The coil terminal going to the distributor should be the same polarity (+ or -) as the battery terminal going to ground. Hope this helps.

He needs to swap ammeter connections also. It won't hurt if he doesn't, just that the ammeter will read backwards. And you correctly did not mention anything about the ballast resistor. Since this is already a 12 volt system, no changes are needed here. BTW, good move changing to an alternator. They are less expensive and easier to maintain than a generator.

As stated by others, since you already have a 12 volt system, your coil and resistor are ok as is. If, for whatever reason you need or want to put on a new coil, you can use one with an internal resistor, one less part. And, yes, I did forget to say you need to reverse the leads on the ammeter.
