Allis B Collectability

I am unfamiliar with the B, and wonder if it is a collectible tractor. Are there a lot in antique inventory? Were there a lot produced? I have the opportunity of purchasing one for $1750. It has been professionally restored and looks fantastic. But, added to the mix is the fact that it has stood outside for 9 months, and even though the exhaust was capped it is, as the owner says, "lightly seized. What am I getting into? Is it a good deal?

Ralph, B's for the most part are not to collectable,They are a very,very good tractor,I have owned a few Allis's and the B is my favorite.I would not be to worried about lightly siezed if it is true it is from sitting and not running. Justin

I pay $1000 for a good running machine with electric start. PTO and hydraulics add more, as does foot brakes. I paid $2250 for mine with electric start, foot brakes, belt/PTO/hydraulics and a Woods belly mower (which was worth $600). I am totally rebuilding it including stainless steel fasteners (polished, of course), and many custom touches. With the mower, the sickle mower, plow, etc., I will probably ask $3500 for it when I am done. But mine is a showpiece that actually will be a worker.


In general the 39 up are not collectable to any great degree. Certain wartime ones with cast iron oil pans, valve covers, and final drive covers may be sought.

Allis built a lot of these, and the 'C' is very similar from the torque tube forward. I have owned 2 1/2 in the past year, and the 1 1/2 cost me a total of $300.

One would be hard pressed to have a tractor "professionally restored" in this area for 1800 bucks. That about covers a pro paint job. However, "stuck" may be just a headache or it may be a major pain. I would move with caution, then again, I'm a mite frugal!

There are a ton of 'B' models out there but the 1937's are extremely rare, hand built tractors and only 100 were ever produced. The first production year was 1938. This was the first year for assembly line production and they had many peculiarities that make them collectable. After that, they are a ton of fun, look good at shows and I don't know any owners who were ever sorry for it.

Still, at $3k... it better run, look sharp and do everything but serve you coffee in the morning.

Tell the guy to get it a little unstuck and if it runs perfectly, you'll think about it.

I just rebuilt an engine for a 1949 1B. The original problem was the engine was froze up. Parts are extremly hard to find. When you do find them one would expect them to be made of gold from looking at the price. To make a long story short I plan to charge somewhere around 3k just for the engine. I tried to talk the owner out of the rebuild and explained to him the engine would cost more than the tractor was worth. He still wanted it done. Now he has a first class engine. The rest of the tractor is still 1949 material.

Tom, Not to be argumentative, But My catalog shows rebuilt engines at about $1200. Exchange.
Doing a rebuild yourself should cost you about $800 for parts including the new sleeves. I admit I haven't done the job myself on an Allis, But The engine doesn't seem much different to work on than any other 4cyl OHV of that vintage. At least it uses bearing inserts instead of the cast babbitt that was used in the production Chevrolet, 235Cu" Blue Flame engines of that period. My catalog show all parts needed for a complete rebuild,Including, Blocks, Heads,cranks, camshafts, and new manifolds. I don't see the problem. Regards, Rich

a nice B with good tires and good paint might be worth that. An old B with a stuck engine is a $300 tractor. If it does not start, you must assume you need $500 worth of engine work. THen you dont know about the clutch or transmission. If it is only lightly stuck tell the guy to get it running and call you back.

For that much money it'd better be purring like a kitten! Any tractor that doesn't run is worth a lot less. If it doesn't run, you can't tell if it knocks or burns oil. You can't tell if the clutch is good. You can't tell if the tranny and rear end is good. You can't tell if the hydraulics are good..... all you have is the sellers word, and sometimes that ain't worth much! Just my opinion.....

Lots of Bs out there yet. Around 125,000 made, first hundred had a Waukesha motor and are more collectable.
