WD 45 cooling system question

I have a '57 WD 45 wide front and I have a concern. Once the engine heats up, I notice steam coming out around the area of the radiator cap. When I shut the tractor off, the steam just starts rolling out and I can hear the coolant boiling (pretty loud). I haven't investigated much into it yet...wanted to wait for some advice. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To get at the thermostat you need to remove the upper hose fitting at the engine. That is the coolant outlet on the head. It is the fitting the hose slides over and clamps on at the engine. When you remove it be carfull not to twist off the mounting bolts! Inside that housing sits the thermostat. You can see if it opens by dunking in a pot of boiling water. However they are so inexpensive I would recomend a new one. NAPA usually has them or TSC etc. Should cost you about $6 to $8. Usually the gasket comes with them but not always. You can make your own gasket if you need to. As others mention this is a pressurized system and needs a good radiator cap also. I can plow heavy soil all day and never go over the 180 degrees the thermostat is set for. Of course I did have the radiator recored a few years ago. Be sure the water pump is circulating water also, they can loose the impeller blades, or fan belt not tight etc.

I started investigating today and noticed that the "steam" is coming from the radiator overflow tube. It has broken off from the top of the radiator near the cap and that is why I noticed the steam in that area. I'm assuming that I can JB Weld that back on (if not, please let me know). I am going to try to locate a new temp gauge and thermostat tomorrow. How can I check to see if the waterpump is working properly? Do I need to check the radiator to be sure it is not plugged and if so, how? Once again, sorry for my ignorance, but I sincerely appreciate the help.

Thanks again,

Donnie

If you do not have a "real" load on the tractor and you're getting steam you may have a "real" problem. It takes quite a bit of plowing or some other serious work to get mine to that stage. Have you checked out the whole cooling system?

To be completely honest, I haven't checked out anything yet. It only started doing this recently and it does it without any load on the tractor. The radiator is in pretty rough shape in one area, but doesn't leak. The temperature guage doesn't work, so I am hoping to fix that this weekend. Please excuse my ignorance, but how do I check the thermostat to see if it needs replaced? Anyway, thanks for the info.

most will heat it in water, when it opens take the temperature of the water. If it's happening with no load.... These tractors were designed with enough cooling for serious work.

Don, Could be something as simple as a bad rad cap, a stuck thermostat, or worst a blown head gasket. Do you have a temp gauge you can read to give you an idea where the engine temp is at? Check the easy stuff first. It very well may not be the head gasket....
