I have noticed a lot of posts over the past months about folks busting up their PTO drives. We farmed for years with Allis Chalmers Equipment, much of it with WD's and the units run off the PTO. The WD I now own has a good working PTO that I use with no problem. I am wondering if folks are simply overloading them with equipment for more modern tractors or what?

Thanks guys,
I guess it is mostly bush hogs that tear them up and guys who have never used the older tractors and trying to do work they were never meant to do. We used to bust a few shear bolts too but always had a couple in the tool box and it only takes a few min to replace and costs almost nothing. Sure beats replacing those PTO gears or casting!

I ran WD45 diesels while growing up and we never had a problem either. I think the problem is with brush hogs.....something that wasn't that popular until the last 20 years or so. These machines can put a tremendous shock load on the pto gearbox. Couple that with tractors that are 20-30 years older now and inexperienced operators and you are bound to have more problems!

Yes, I too ran and have seen run a lot equipment from the pto of a 45. However one was a hay conditioner with a shear bolt, the other a baler also with a shear bolt. And it wasn't all that hard to bust the bolts either. All you had to do was choke the baler or let the clutch out a little fast in starting the equipment. Do the brush hogs have shear bolts,I am not familiar with them.

Mine has a shear bolt. Some have a friction clutch. Some people replace the shear bolt with a hardened bolt and tighten the clutch up too much because they are tired of the bolts shearing or the clutch slipping....DUH!
