I have a 1953 WD45NF s/n WD151929 with stuck steering - steering wheel is free down to u-joint where it goes forward into front pedistal. Wondering what likely failure mode is and/or how to further diagnose. Previous owner appears to have made some mods to this tractor based on other AC models - inculding both WC and D15 or D17. Looks like front was worked on. Is it possible he mixed parts that are close but don't go together? I was told WC steering same so that would not be a problem.

My WD has had the steering lock up also. Found it to be the pin that holds the gear in front. Took top cover off and replaced was hitting the gear or inside of box causing very minimaul movement

Check to see if the roll pin that holds the universal onto the shafts isn't hitting the oilpan. Check the support bracket for the forward shaft for binding(just in front of the u-joint)

I just completely rebuilt the steering on my WD45 from the steering wheel to the front steering spindle shaft. I made my own parts to ensure tight steering. I encountered stuck steering when my young apprentice inserted a roll pin that was too long for the u-joint. There really isn't a whole lot that would cause binding. The worm and worm gear can be installed in a way that would create some difficulty. Also, if the front spindle shaft bearings have too much pre-load on them, it could add to the problem. Let us know what you come up with.....

Thanks for info - I will check it out when I get a chance. I also have a WD45 single front that has other problems. May just try to swap front ends - do you know if that will work?

If you swap the entire pedistal it should.
