Gentlemen, I am asking this for my father. He has an early 40's B that always started like a champ with only one or two turns of the crank. Now it will not start with crank but starts well when pulled. Any ideas, magneto, or other?

Thank You in advance

Gentlemen,

Thank you so much for the feedback. My faster said the mag was worked on years ago and repaired and he also suspects this to be the problem. We initially ruled oyut the points, plugs and such as it was an instant change in operation. It has been some time since I cranked it (I opted for a Massey 135 electric) however I do recall that "click". We are trying to get the mag repaired/replaced as we have found some that seem to be rather expensive $300. Thanks again for the help.

JW

What Ken said.....

If it's been a while, swap some fresh plugs in there. Make double sure they are NON resistor plugs (Autolite 295) and NON resistor wires. Either will cause your problems.

Next bet is just a serious need for fresh points and condensor. If that doesn't do it.... check out that impulse coupling.

If you remove the mag, you can "dry fire" the thing by turning the impulse lugs by hand (clockwise) until it loads up and snaps. Make sure the mag is right side up when you try this. DON'T do this with the mag in your lap either or you'll be singing soprano in church this Sunday. You should feel a stong spring action on that wheel and it should snap smartly.

All good advise here. We must be a smart lot.

I would check the plugs and wires first, and then the mag.

I'd put my money on the mag...

Broken impulse spring in the magneto.

In the magneto, there is a device called an impulse coupler. If you turn the tractor over very slowly with the hand crank, you should hear a load "click" in the mag just when it would normally be firing the spark plug. Your symptoms indicate a bad impulse coupler in the mag. This assumes your points, condensor, and other tune-up items are in good shape. Timing could be off too - that would cause a similar problem.

I have the same symptoms with a good mag in place, how do you time it to crank start from there, I am a little stuck with the Mag at this point

Thanks

I've never timed an engine this way, but I've heard you can time a magneto this way:

First, have the magneto timed so that it is rotated toward the engine. Next, crank the engine by hand to where the timing mark is on at the point where the engine would normally fire. Be sure your ignition wires are disconnected. Now, slowly turn the magneto toward you, just until the impulse coupling snaps. At this point, tighten the mag.

Perhaps others can do better at explaining this than I did. I've always been able to start the tractor and use a timing light.

Same thing many years ago on the home farm, with a WC and C- either rebuild the mag or switch to battery ignition, coil, distributor, etc. Solved the problem on both- would pull it a few feet and it would start.
