Oil pressure, Allis B

Just so you know. I recently purchased a 1948 Allis B. It had been sitting outside 3 or so years prior to my purchase. I had checked changed all fluids except engine oil which showed no signs of water in it. Ran it a couple hours with mystery oil to clean it up some. Yesterday, purchased and installed a new NAPA oil filter along with changing oil. Put 30 wt oil in it. Upon startup, oil pressure did not come up. After running a few minutes and speeding up engine I did finally get maybe 2 psi tops, but idled down it went back to zero. Shut it down, put old oil filter back in. Upon startup,oil pressure climbed to 10 psi at idle and 15 psi with engine throttled up. Guess I know what the cause is. PS: old filter was also a NAPA, but the old style, not the new improved version.Bob D. (La)

YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK IF THE STAND PIPE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FILTER CAME OFF WITH THE FILTER.[IF YOUR MODEL HAS THAT TYPE OF COTTON FILTER] I HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME YESTERDAY. THE NEW FILTER NEEDS TO HAVE THAT TRANSFER PIPE INSTALLED TO KEEP OIL PRESSURE UP. I HAVE A I-40 MODEL, JUST A THOUGHT. BOB

Bob, Thanks for the info. However, I was careful and insured that the standpipe was still inserted into the oil filter base and at the correct height. The problem was purely and simply the new style oil filter doesn't produce the correct amount of back pressure to keep engine oil pressure at the correct level. Thanks for answering though. Bob. Bob, it may interest you to know that someone on this list tested the original type pressure gauge with "NORMAL" written on it. Turns out the "N" is about 3 psi, the "O" is about 6 psi, etc. So if you're getting 15 psi you would be over in the "A" range - now that's some good oil pressure! (My B runs on or slightly below "N" most of the time right now ....)

As a kid, some years ago now, I worked on a farm and we had a B. It had seen much use, been rebuilt once or twice already, this was in the 60s, anyway, it had little or no oil pressure, when worked hard in the summer and it got hot it had none, the needle didn't move, however that tractor ran for years that way and we USED it. They have flow, but no pressure, flathead ford truck had the same thing, used that for a few years after we got it too before rebuilding it.
