Wd45 starter problem

The starter on my wd45 will spin but not engage the fly wheel. It does this every once in a while. When I take it off and put juice to it on the bench, it will work just fine. I will then put the starter back on the tractor and it will work fine for a month or so. One day I will try to start it and it will do it again. It is a recurring problem. I figure one of you guys know exactly what it is. Thanks, Dennis

Also check ring gear. If they have a spot where the teeth are worn this can happen.

It is very likely the Bendix assembley. Mine did that and it worked fine by hand and off the bench but the ratchet in there would slip quite often when loaded. Easy to repair, not expensive.
