Best way to stop leaks?

I have a D-17 #12610 that has a few leaks.

My first leak looks like the gasket under the transport valve. The previous owner said he replaced it (I have no idea when) but it still leaks (steady drip).

My second leak is the rear PTO shaft seal. The previous owner said he replaced but it's still leaking.

Does anyone have some tricks or good sealing techniques they would please share with a new guy?

Has anyone tried using oil additives for stopping leaks? Do they work or do they make things worse.

Dave, I've found using the brown Permatex shellack or the old "Indian Head" shellack works the best on those Pesky leaks. Works great around the edges of seals on those uneven surfaces & on valve cover gasket leaks also. I still use it when installing head gaskets. Never heard of adding an oil additive to stop a leak other than for an auto trans. I've been a mechanic for over 35 years, and personally, the only way to fix a leak no matter where it's at is the correct way & not cutting corners. Those problems always seem to come back and "bite" ya later when not done correctly. That's experience talkin'.... LOL!!

Thanks for the advice!

After a little more investigation I found out the transport valve wasn't tight. The previous owner must not have tightened the bolts enough.

Now that that's solved I have a bigger problem regarding my PTO shaft. It appears the shaft has a bend in it/slight twist. How much runout can this shaft have before I start having problems (Besides leaking?) Do you have to pull the tranny apart to replace the PTO shaft?
